Wedding Dress Care 101

Wedding Dress Care 101

What to Do After You Pick Up Your Gown

YAY! You’ve said yes, your dress has arrived, and now it’s officially in your hands and ready to head home… now what?

This is one of the most special (and delicate!) garments you’ll ever own, so if you’re feeling a little nervous about taking it home, you’re not alone. The good news? It doesn’t have to be stressful. With just a little extra care, your gown will stay just as beautiful as the day you fell in love with it.

From pickup day to your walk down the aisle, how your dress is stored and handled really does make a difference in how it looks and feels on your wedding day. We’ve got you, keep reading for everything you need to know to keep your gown in pristine condition every step of the way.

When You Take Your Dress Home

This is the moment it becomes real, your dress is officially yours. It’s also where small, unintentional mistakes can happen, so a little guidance goes a long way.

First things first: your gown will go home from Something White in a breathable, zippable garment bag, and your stylist will walk you through exactly how to store and handle it during your pick-up appointment. This bag is designed to protect your dress while still allowing airflow which is super important for keeping fabrics fresh and preventing damage.

Once you’re home, keep your dress in that garment bag and hang it in a cool, dry place like a spare closet or guest room. Avoid areas like basements or attics where temperature and humidity fluctuate, as this can affect delicate fabrics over time.

You’ll also want to steer clear of non-breathable plastic coverings (like dry cleaning bags). These can trap moisture and lead to yellowing or mildew; definitely not what we want.

And while it might be tempting to show your gorgeous gown off, be mindful of its surroundings. Keep your gown away from pets, smoke, perfumes, and strong odors, as fabrics can absorb scents more easily than you’d think.

Handling Your Dress (Less Is More)

We get it, once your dress is home, the urge to take another peek (or five) is very real. Moms, sisters, besties… everyone is excited. But when it comes to your gown, less handling really is best.

Every time your dress is taken out, it’s exposed to oils, products, and potential snags, so being a little intentional here makes a big difference.

Before touching your gown, always wash your hands. Even if they look clean, natural oils or residue can transfer to delicate fabrics over time. The same goes for trying it on, avoid wearing makeup, self-tanner, perfume, or lotions, as these can easily transfer and cause staining (especially on lighter fabrics).

Try to limit how often you take your dress out. We promise, it’s just as beautiful hanging safely in its bag as it is in your living room. Save those moments for when they really matter, like fittings or final try-ons.

When you do handle your gown, make sure to rehang it properly using the interior hanger loops, not the straps or sleeves. Those loops are there to support the weight of the dress and help it keep its shape. Straps alone aren’t designed to carry that load and can stretch over time.

And a big one: this same level of care applies to your alterations appointments, too. Come with clean hands, minimal products on your skin, and be mindful when stepping in and out of your gown. It helps ensure your dress stays in pristine condition all the way through your final fitting.

A good rule of thumb? Treat your dress a little like a museum piece. Admire it, protect it, and handle it with intention.

Before the Wedding: Final Prep

The last week before your wedding is when everything starts to feel very real, in the best way. Your dress is no longer just hanging in your closet; it’s about to become your wedding dress.

One of the most important steps during this time is steaming your gown. Wrinkles from storage or travel are completely normal, and steaming ensures your dress looks flawless in person and in photos. For our local brides, we actually offer professional steaming services at Something White, so you can trust your gown is being handled with expert care right before you walk down the aisle. You can ask your stylist about scheduling a week-of steam during your gown pick-up appointment or you can always give us a call at the boutique to get this on the books.

Next, think about timing and support. Coordinate your steaming appointment so your dress is ready as close to the wedding as possible, and assign a trusted person to be responsible for your gown on the wedding day. This helps eliminate last-minute scrambling and keeps everything running smoothly.

Finally, prepare a small emergency kit to have on hand. A few simple essentials like fashion tape, a stain remover pen, a sewing kit, and a couple of safety pins can be a lifesaver for minor dress moments that pop up throughout the day.

A little preparation in this final week means your dress gets the same care and attention leading up to your wedding as it did when you first said yes, and you get to walk into your day feeling calm + fully ready.

At the end of the day, caring for your wedding dress isn’t about adding pressure, it’s just another small, meaningful part of the experience. These little moments of intention are what keep your gown looking exactly the way you felt when you first said yes to it.

A few simple habits truly go a long way in protecting something so special, so you can focus less on worrying about your dress and more on enjoying everything leading up to your wedding day.

And remember, you’re never doing this alone. We’re always here as your resource, whether you have a quick question, need reassurance, or just want a little guidance along the way.
